Sophie began singing aged 17 with Glyndebourne Youth Opera where she was encouraged to start having lessons with Jane Metcalfe. Whilst studying at Leeds University Sophie became a member of both Leeds Youth Opera and Leeds University Opera Soc performing a number of roles including Ilia, Princess Ninneta, Ännchen, Nightingale and Johanna – Sweeney Todd with full orchestra in the Carriageworks Theatre, Leeds. Upon graduating with a 1st Class Mathematics Degree Sophie moved to London where she worked and studied part time at Birkbeck University and Morley College.
Sophie sang in a student chorus at The Royal Opera House conducted by Sir Mark Elder and attended BYO’s summer workshop before heading to Birmingham Conservatoire to commence full time Vocal and Operatic Studies with Scottish mezzo soprano Christine Cairns.
During Sophie’s time at Birmingham Conservatoire she sang a number of roles: Lauretta – Gianni Schicchi, Galatea – Acis & Galatea, Rose Maurrant – Street Scene and Bastienne – Bastien und Bastienne whilst also taking part in masterclasses, song recitals, contemporary and chamber music projects. A prizewinner in the Edward Brooks English Song Competition, Sophie was also a finalist in the Dean & Chadlington Competition in 2013 and a quarter-finalist at the International Student LiedDuo Competition in Holland as well as competing as a Finalist in the Cecil Drew, Mario Lanza and Ashleyan Opera Competitions.
Sophie graduated with a Distinction and the Postgraduate Prize for Excellence from Birmingham Conservatoire of Music in 2013. She has since sung with the Orchestra of St John’s at St John’s Smith Square, performing Mozart arias with violinist Dimitry Sitkovetsky, Strauss and Rachmaninov songs at The Ashmolean Museum Oxford and New Year’s Eve concerts at King’s Place, Smith Square and Dorchester Abbey performing popular arias by J Strauss and Lehar.
She performed song premieres with the Coull Quartet at Warwick Arts Centre and has also sung with Buxted Symphony Orchestra, The Forest of Dean Symphony Orchestra, and Ripon, Bexhill, Benson, Billingshurst, Ludlow and Warwick & Kenilworth Choral Societies.
Winner of the Förderpreis der Stadt Torgau at the Internationale Sängerakademie 2015 Sophie’s recent roles include cover Musetta for Clapham Opera Festival, Adina – L’elisir d’amore for Barefoot Opera, Atalanta – Xerxes for Hampstead Garden Opera and Damon – Acis & Galatea at the Brighton Early Music Festival.
Sophie joined Opera Prelude in 2015, her performances include their Dame Anne Evans Masterclass with the International Opera Awards, presenting the final lecture of their summer season: Scenes of Summer: Lily, lily, rose and Leighton House’s Summer Patrons Party. Further work includes two self-devised shows at the Kino-Teatr ,St Leonards-on-sea: ‘The Russian Voice‘ & ‘Mozart in Russia & Other Tall Tales’ which she directed, scripted and sang in with various local and international performers.
